II. UNDERSTANDING DISEASES §72–§81
EN9 Acute diseases may be individual, sporadic or epidemic. A few of the epidemic diseases are acute miasms.
The homeopathic physician does not give fixed names to diseases that are variable.
73a The homeopathic physician is not caught up in prejudices devised by the ordinary school, which established names for some fevers (outside of which, great teeming nature would not dare produce any others) in order to treat them according to a definite mold. The homeopathic physician does not acknowledge such names as dungeon fever, bilious fever, typhus fever, putrid fever, nerve fever, or mucous fever; rather, he cures each one according to its own peculiarity, without giving it a fixed name.
Treatment of purpura miliaris fever versus scarlet fever
73b Since 1801, physicians have been confusing a kind of purpura miliaris (roodvonk) that came from the West [Belgium] with scarlet fever, even though they have quite different signs. Scarlet fever (which was always epidemic) found its preventative and curative means in belladonna, while roodvonk (which was most often sporadic) found its preventative and curative means in aconite. In recent years, the two diseases sometimes seem to have combined themselves into an eruptive fever of its own kind, for which neither aconite nor belladonna alone is exactly homeopathically fitting.
EN10 Of the different kinds of protracted diseases, those caused by prolonged allopathic treatment and by chronic miasms are truly chronic. Other diseases linger due to obstacles to recovery.
Harmfulness of Broussais’ treatment of bloodletting and starvation diet
74a Of all the methods which have been devised as help against disease, no more allopathic, no more nonsensical, no more inexpedient one can be thought of than Broussais’ debilitating treatment of bloodletting and starvation diet which, over the course of the past several years, has spread throughout a large part of the world. No intelligent human being can think that there is anything medical, anything medicinally helpful about this treatment. Real medicine, even blindly seized and administered to the patient, has here and there improved a case of disease because it was accidentally homeopathic, but from bloodletting, healthy common sense can expect nothing except the inevitable diminution and shortening of life.
It is a deplorable and completely groundless confabulation that most, indeed all, diseases consist of local inflammations. Even for true local inflammations, the most certain, rapid cure is to be found in medicines which dynamically take away the arterial irritation that lies at the base of the inflammation without the least loss of bodily fluids or vitality, while local blood withdrawals, even at the disease site, subsequently only increase the tendency to repeated inflammation of these parts. In general, in cases of inflammatory fever, it is just as inexpedient—in fact, it is murderous—to drain off many pounds of blood from the veins, since a little commensurate medicine takes away (often in a few hours) this arterial irritation that is driving the previously so quiet blood, along with the disease lying at its base, without the least loss of bodily fluids or vitality. Such a great loss of blood is manifestly irreparable for the rest of a patient’s life.
